Forest Lake took the tough path to being crowned Class 4A, Section 7 champions last season. It lost to Andover in the winner’s bracket final and had to get back to the final and then defeat the Huskies in back-to-back games to clinch a berth to the state tournament. The path to this year’s section championship was much simpler. After defeating Anoka 3-2 in the quarterfinal, the Rangers (19-5, 15-3) cruised past the one seed Blaine 12-0 to set up a rematch against Anoka in the final.

The rematch was much more one-sided, as Forest Lake scored early and often to defeat Anoka 9-0 to head back to the state tournament.

First Report

Forest Lake is headed to the 4A state tournament after defeating Anoka 9-0 in the Class 4A, Section 7 championship game.

The Rangers (19-5, 15-3) wasted no time getting on the board. Bethany Weiss got a leadoff single and then Madison Larrabee laid down a sacrifice bunt to get her to second. Grace Frechette followed that up with an opposite field single though first and second to score Weiss and it was 1-0 quickly.

Weiss came around to score again the next time she came to the plate, as she crushed a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-0 Forest Lake.

The very next inning, Maddie Muellner added another two-run home run for the Rangers to make it 5-0.

Muellner came through again in the bottom of the sixth, as she smacked a triple down the right field line that scored Bailey Thomas. Muellner then beat the throw home and scored on a bunt single by Amber Dunaski to make it 7-0. Two more runs came across after a single by Frechette to build on the lead.

That was more than enough runs for Avery Muellner. She tortured the Tornadoes’ (16-9, 8-5) hitters and finished with eight strikeouts and two hits in a complete game shutout. Brianya Thies and Paige Schultz picked up the hits for the Tornadoes.
